The Islamic Republic of Iran sent a donation of 8.8 tons of rice to Cuba for the victims of Hurricane Melissa, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment (MINCEX) through its official social media channels.
The shipment will be distributed in the Granma province, one of the most affected by the powerful cyclone that hit eastern Cuba at the end of October, causing severe damage to homes, crops, and the electrical infrastructure.
“In a gesture of solidarity, the Islamic Republic of Iran provided 8.8 tons of rice for the victims of Hurricane Melissa in Cuba. The donation will be sent to the province of Granma,” published MINCEX on its X account.
On her part, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Déborah Rivas Saavedra, publicly thanked the Iranian government for "the fraternal help donated to compatriots affected by Hurricane Melissa."
The donation, although small in scale compared to the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone, is part of a series of humanitarian aid sent by countries allied with the Cuban regime, including Mexico, China, Russia, and Algeria.
Everyone has delivered basic supplies in response to the emergency.
Granma was one of the provinces most affected by Hurricane Melissa, which caused flooding, landslides, and the collapse of power networks.
According to official figures, in the eastern part of the country, there were reported over 95 thousand homes affected and extensive damage to roads and agricultural fields.
The relationship between Cuba and Iran has remained close for decades, particularly in the political and commercial spheres. Both governments often express mutual support in international forums and maintain cooperation agreements in sectors such as energy, biotechnology, and the food industry.
The Cuban Embassy in Tehran also announced the donation, highlighting the "spirit of friendship and solidarity" between the two countries at a time when the island is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in its recent history.
