The musician Julio Noroña, founder of the orchestra Los Van Van and described by his peers as “a true legend in the history of Cuban music,” passed away this Wednesday, according to a message from the group itself.
In a public note, Los Van Van announced the passing of the 85-year-old artist, remembering him not only for his talent but also for his human role within the group.
“Julio was not just an exceptional musician; he was an uncle, a father, a loyal friend, and a model of discipline and dedication,” the statement noted, highlighting the close bond he maintained with his colleagues for decades.
The orchestra emphasized that the unwavering friendship of Noroña with Maestro Juan Formell, creator of Los Van Van, made him a central figure within the so-called "great vanvanera family," a term the group uses to refer to the artistic and human core that supports the project.
In the text, it is stated that he dedicated his life to the orchestra founded on December 4, 1969 by the late Juan Formell. Noroña was not only a member of it, but also helped to build it and was an indispensable part of its success.
“Today we bid farewell to a man who dedicated his life to this project that he loved so much and helped to build. His mark is profound, indelible, and eternal in the soul of our orchestra,” expressed the members of Los Van Van, highlighting Noroña's lasting impact on the group and the musical history they have shared.
The message concludes with a farewell filled with affection and recognition: “Forever in our hearts, maestro. Your rhythm, your smile, and your spirit will continue to travel in every beat of the Train of Cuba,” referring to the nickname by which the orchestra is known.
With these words, Los Van Van summarize the artistic and emotional weight of Julio Noroña within the band he helped to found, leaving an indelible mark, according to his colleagues.
Julio Eladio Noroña Cruz was a founding musician of the orchestra, one of the most influential and iconic groups in Cuban popular music.
He was part of the initial core created by Juan Formell, and since then he became an essential presence within the group, both artistically and personally. He remained active until almost the end of his life.
His career left a deep mark on the sound and identity of the group. His talent contributed to the development of the band's unique style.
His musical legacy remains alive not only in the salsa group but also in his family. He is the father of Julito Noroña (guiro player in Los Que Son Son) and the uncle of pianist Sergio Noroña.
