Martiño Ramos Soto, the Galician pedophile professor who is being pursued by Spanish justice and was found in Cuba, was a well-known figure for his leftist activism.
Ramos Soto, a music teacher, was actively involved in the political life of the city of As Burgas, in Ourense, as he had been a member of the left-wing parties En Común and En Marea, explains a profile from the Spanish media 20 Minutos this Monday.
Who is now among the 10 most wanted fugitives by the Spanish authorities had built a facade as a feminist ally and leftist activist.
Ramos Soto abused a minor for four years, whose vulnerability he was aware of, as he had taught her since elementary school.
He began to abuse her in sixth grade when the girl was 12 years old. Soto started writing to her, pretending to be a minor who empathized with her problems. Until one day they arranged to meet in a classroom to get to know each other.
"The minor was left in a state of shock, and the accused embraced her, telling her how much he loved her, that he supported her, sat her on his lap, and kissed her on the mouth. From that moment on, he managed to meet with her several times at school," reads the ruling of the case.
The now-fugitive subjected the girl to sadistic practices such as slaps and beatings. He raped her, once beat her brutally, and abandoned her in the wilderness.
In 2021, after four years of ongoing abuse, the minor filed a report with the Civil Guard.
That same year, the pedophile teacher was sentenced to 13 years in prison, but when the police went to his home, they were unable to locate him.
Found in Cuba
This Monday, the Spanish National Police has requested that Cuban authorities increase surveillance on Ramos Soto.
Ramos, 50 years old, was located in Havana, where he has been residing since July, and is now among the ten most wanted fugitives in Spain.
There is no active extradition treaty between Cuba and Spain, but the authorities of both countries maintain diplomatic and police contacts to achieve this.
Europa Press reported that the Provincial Court of Ourense formally requested the extradition of Martiño Ramos Soto on October 31, after confirming his whereabouts in the Cuban capital with police sources.
Ramos escaped from Spain using his own passport and a planned route that included Portugal, Brazil, and Peru before reaching Cuba. "His flight was carefully prepared," admit the investigators, who fear that the pedophile may escape again if surveillance on the island is not strengthened.
In Cuba, the convicted individual has been presenting himself as "Martín Soto" for months and working as a documentary photographer in the Havana neighborhood of El Vedado, where he frequents galleries and cafes.
Her social media posts depict a peaceful life, away from her past as a teacher and political activist in Galicia.
The National Police of Spain has requested that the Cuban authorities keep the fugitive under close surveillance while the extradition request is processed.
Cuban state media have not reported on the allegations in this case nor have they confirmed the arrest of this fugitive from justice in Havana.
