A U.S. strategic bomber, the B-52H Stratofortress, capable of carrying nuclear armament, flew over the coasts of Venezuela this Monday and approached Caracas, in a move that heightened military tension in the Caribbean, reported El Nacional Costa Rica, Perú 21, and La Nación.

The aircraft took off in the morning from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and arrived in the Caribbean by late afternoon.

According to records from Flightradar24, the B-52 flew off the coast of the Paraguaná Peninsula, made several turns for over half an hour, and then continued towards northern-central Venezuela, approaching Caracas before heading towards Puerto La Cruz.

The flyover did not occur in isolation. Perú 21 reported that the bomber was accompanied by at least four F/A-18 fighter jets and two E-2D Hawkeye early warning aircraft, which are essential for coordinating operations and detecting long-range threats.

The maneuver takes place at a particularly delicate moment for the region. recalled that since September, the United States has maintained a reinforced naval presence in the Caribbean—with nuclear submarines, destroyers, and thousands of soldiers—as part of the offensive against the government of Nicolás Maduro.

In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently issued a security alert for Venezuelan airspace, leading several airlines to cancel flights to that country.

The U.S. Air Force describes the B-52 as a bomber capable of conducting strategic attacks, air interdiction, anti-ship operations, and large-scale maritime surveillance missions, in addition to being able to carry precision-guided nuclear or conventional weapons.
