Violence claims another life in Santiago de Cuba.

In the early hours of November 26, a man identified as Alfredo Elegido was brutally attacked while he was, as usual, heading out to get the rationed bread corresponding to the ration book.

The incident occurred on Avenida Patria, between Callejón de Soto and the area of the Mariana Grajales Housing Complex, a dark and unprotected area.

The initial information was reported by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who raised an alert about a violent attack on a citizen in broad daylight.

Shortly thereafter, neighbors and close associates confirmed on social media that the victim passed away due to the attack.

A witness stated, “If he is in criminalistics, it’s because he died; he was my neighbor,” while another resident clarified that “it was three stab wounds” that ended his life.

A routine marked by solidarity

Alfredo Elegido was not a baker, as initially thought, but an engineer and lay judge, committed to his community.

According to explanations from people close to him, he would leave early in the morning not only to pick up his own bread but also for several neighbors.

"He didn't sell bread; he was going to buy bread for himself and some neighbors, he always did," explained a user.

Another added: “He was looking for bread, had breakfast, and left for work. He didn’t seek out problems or get involved with anyone.”

That early morning, that usual routine was interrupted by violence.

Despite being widely known in his community for his humble and helpful nature, he was attacked without warning. The assault took place in an unlit area, a situation that residents have been reporting.

"The entire Patria Avenue has been dark for days," wrote a woman. "Just imagine, with electricity things happen; in the dark, it's worse," she added.

Dismay in the community

The death of Alfredo triggered a wave of collective grief and indignation. Dozens of residents expressed their sorrow over the loss and highlighted his humanity.

"He was a person with such a big heart that I am left speechless," lamented Daulit León, a family friend.

"You saw me be born, you saw my children too, I still can't believe it. Rest in peace"; "Alfre, what a pain for all of us who love you"; "Rest in peace, my good friend, my condolences to the family"; "Rest in peace, a cultured, humble man with values"; "A very good man and neighbor, very helpful" are just some of the comments.

A close friend was even more explicit: "The government and the relevant institutions must take a firm stance against all those criminals. That man was a great human being and an upstanding worker."

Between indignation and fear

The murder of Alfredo has once again brought to the forefront the increasingly unsafe climate in Santiago de Cuba, especially during the early hours of the morning.

The indignation was accompanied by demands directed at the State and law enforcement.

A woman harshly summed up the collective feeling: "This is a jungle."

A large number of comments denounce the lack of street lighting as one of the factors that contribute to crime.

Some even claimed that the attackers were from the very neighborhood. "Those who did it are from right there," wrote a commenter, suggesting that they are local criminals operating with complete impunity.

The demands for justice multiplied: “Let the full weight of the law fall on those killers who seem to have no family,” “Those criminals deserve life imprisonment,” “If they kill, then let them be killed too or shot, and you will see how this changes.”

The murder of Alfredo Egido is not merely a reflection of an individual tragedy, but a symptom of a society deeply fractured by insecurity, economic crisis, lack of public resources, and the absence of effective justice.
