A 20-year-old Cuban man was arrested for allegedly hitting the owner of the house where he lived in Miami with an axe, according to police reports and local media.

The authorities identified the assailant as José Lázaro Trinidad Jr., who allegedly attacked the homeowner during a dispute over access to a room.

According to the Miami Police Department, the incident occurred at a residence located in the 800 block of Northwest 24th Court, in the neighborhood of Little Havana.

The agents responded to a call for aggravated assault with a knife and found the victim with a wound on the back of the head.

"He was waiting for me with an axe and hit me on the head."

The owner told the media that he was trying to enter his room, which was locked, but did not receive a response from inside.

"I was knocking on the door to enter my room and there was no response, so I broke it down; when I did, I found them waiting for me with an axe and they hit me on the head.", she declared to Univision.

According to the police report, after the verbal confrontation, Trinidad armed himself with "a small chrome-colored axe" and struck the homeowner as he turned around.

The injury was considered minor, and the victim refused medical transportation, stating that they would personally take care of it.

A shed as a dwelling and unauthorized access

The alleged aggressor had been living on the property for the past eight months, but not in the main house.

Witnesses and tenants reported that he occupied a small shed in the backyard and did not have permission to access the interior of the house, much less the owner's room.

The unauthorized entry into the room and the subsequent aggression worsened Trinidad's legal situation, as he remained at the scene of the incident and was the one who called 911 himself. The police arrested him on the spot and recovered the weapon used.

Self-defense and criminal proceedings

Trinidad declared that he acted in self-defense, claiming that the owner tried to hit him first. However, the victim identified him as the aggressor and recognized the axe as the weapon used in the attack.

According to available records, Trinidad faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, although he was not listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade jail's website at the time of the last report.

The authorities have not clearly determined the reason that sparked the conflict.

This case highlights a recurring phenomenon in neighborhoods like Little Havana, where the lack of affordable housing options leads to informal agreements between landlords and tenants, often without legal backing or proper conditions.

Living in improvised spaces, such as sheds or unapproved annexes, poses risks that are not only structural but also personal, as this violent incident demonstrates.
