A SWAT operation conducted by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) ended in tragedy on Tuesday when a man died following an armed confrontation during the execution of a search warrant in an alleged child pornography case.
The intervention also left one person detained and a devastated Cuban family crying out for answers, according to reports from Local 10 and Telemundo 51.
The incident occurred in a residence located at 15513 SW 102nd Court, in the Palmetto Estates community, where agents from the Internet Crimes Against Children unit were conducting an investigation that had been ongoing for over a year.
The county sheriff, Rosie Cordero-Stutz, stated that when they announced via loudspeakers and evacuated two adults and a child, an armed man came to the door and "confronted the officers," which led them to open fire. The man died at the scene, detailed the officer quoted by Local 10.
After the shooting, the agents arrested a second individual under investigation for distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material, the sheriff noted. The alleged victims in the case would be "ranging in age from infants to six years old," she added.
But while the official version was being disseminated, a human drama was unfolding outside the home, leaving images of despair and confusion.
Zaida González, the mother of one of the residents, arrived at the scene in tears after receiving a panicked phone call.
“My son called me and said, ‘Run, Mom. The SWAT team entered. They killed my stepson,’” she recounted to Telemundo 51.
The woman claims that nobody explained to her what was happening and that she only received a call to pick up her three-year-old grandson. “I don’t know why they entered her house. I don’t know anything,” she insisted.
Inside the home, another family member, identified as Yudimi Rodríguez, according to the video shared by Telemundo 51, recounted through tears how she was forcibly removed without any information:
"They took me out of the house as if we were criminals, and my son was left there all alone, bleeding to death. They killed him. They ended my son's life. This tragedy I will never overcome."
Rodríguez, who lives in the house with her three children, her husband, and her mother, identified the deceased as Christopher Barata, 21 years old. Her other son, Cristian Barata, 25, was reportedly the one who was detained during the operation.
The woman categorically denies the accusations against her family:
"Everything they are saying is a lie. My children work, they don’t go out, they don’t drink, they don’t smoke, they don’t use drugs. Work and home, nothing more."
A mistaken house? The family claims it; the sheriff denies it
Amid the tension, family members assured Telemundo 51 that the agents may have entered the wrong residence.
“The grandmother is distraught. They won’t let me through because they say there’s an investigation. But according to reports, they entered the wrong house,” González stated.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz denied that possibility:
"There is no evidence. We only made contact with one house. The individual we have in custody is the person who had the search warrant against him," he stated to Telemundo 51.
As is the case in shootings involving police officers, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) took over the investigation.
