The tranquility of the neighborhood in North Miami Beach was abruptly disrupted last Friday when an intruder forced his way into the home of Ayana Dyce, a well-known jeweler and television presenter.
The security cameras captured the exact moment the suspect broke into the house, and although the alarm went off immediately, the perpetrator stayed inside for several minutes.
The incident has caused shock not only due to the boldness of the act but also because of the possibility that it may have been a targeted theft with prior knowledge of what was in the home: high-value jewelry.
"What were they looking for?": the victim's testimony
Ayana Dyce couldn't believe what she was seeing when she reviewed the footage captured by the security cameras in her home. “At first, I thought: what?” she recounted, still in disbelief.
In the video, an individual can be seen forcing the back door and entering with determination, as if they knew exactly where to go.
Although there was no one in the house at that moment, Dyce's mother, who has access to a smart speaker installed in the home, tried to scare off the intruder from a distance.
“(She said) ‘Sal, what are you doing here?’” Dyce recounted.
Despite the attempt, the suspect continued searching the house.
For Dyce, there is no doubt that the thief was after something specific: a bag of jewelry he keeps in his home.
"They were looking for that bag of jewelry I have at home," she assured.
Her certainty is based on details she observed while reviewing the state in which her bedroom was left.
“They rummaged through my room; they knew exactly where to go,” he said.
A television jewelry designer and a possible planned target
Ayana Dyce has been dedicated to selling jewelry for three years, a role she has developed between Atlanta and South Florida.
Her face is also known on television, where she presents segments related to the world of jewelry.
That public visibility, combined with the fact of having high-value products at home, makes her a potential target for those seeking quick gains.
Furthermore, Dyce does not rule out the possibility that the attack was carried out by someone who was already familiar with the interior of his home.
"Deep down, she thought: Did anyone follow me home from the exchange one day? Did anyone see me taking suitcases out of the car?" she wondered.
It even suggests the possibility that someone who worked in her house might have noticed the jewels.
Without a clear inventory, but with persistent fear
Upon arriving home, Dyce tried to check if the intruder had taken anything.
"I have an idea of where the larger items are, but I'm still trying to figure out what small object or few things are missing," he explained.
The process of accurately determining what was stolen is still ongoing, and the North Miami Beach Police have indicated that they are still awaiting a detailed inventory to move forward with the investigation.
Beyond the material losses, what worries Dyce the most is the sense of vulnerability that the incident has left him with.
"I want the person to be identified; I want this neighborhood to know that it is a safe place to live," he stated.
And she added with determination, “I do not want this to become a pattern of behavior that makes anyone think there are vulnerable elderly people living in this neighborhood who can be taken advantage of.”
The police have confirmed that the case remains under active investigation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether they have concrete leads on the identity of the intruder, but they hope that the footage from security cameras, along with the inventory of stolen items, will help advance the identification and capture of the perpetrator.
