An accidental incident was the cause of the multiple injuries that have left a 15-year-old adolescent from the municipality of Yaguajay in critical condition, hospitalized at the José Martí Pérez Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, as reported by the official media Escambray.
Lieutenant Colonel Raúl Banguela Moya, head of the Revolutionary National Police (PNR) in Yaguajay, stated to the radio station La Voz de Yaguajay that the investigations revealed that the minor climbed a wall to pick guavas and lost his balance, falling onto a fibercement tank. In the attempt to hold on, several bricks from the wall were dislodged, which worsened the injuries.
The officer explained that there were no other people present at the scene at the time of the accident, according to the testimony of a neighbor who helped the teenager and called for assistance. The experts found no signs of violence or blood samples associated with a criminal act, therefore it was ruled out that it was a case of sexual assault, as circulated on social media.
The teenager remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital in espirituano, reported in critical condition, although with “favorable signs in his progress,” specified Dr. Ramón Aquino Lorenzo, director of the José Martí Pérez Pediatric Hospital.
According to the doctor, the young man was transferred from the Joaquín Paneca Municipal Hospital in Yaguajay, where he underwent surgery by a multidisciplinary team. “The quick and professional actions of that group were crucial in the care of the multi-traumatized patient,” the physician stated.
Before the causes of the accident were clarified, the hospital in Sancti Spíritus itself reported on its Facebook page that the minor suffered from internal injuries to organs such as the spleen, pancreas, and duodenum, but showed no signs of sexual abuse and had not passed away, thus debunking the rumors circulating on social media. This information was included in a news report regarding the patient's condition after surgery.
Until the afternoon of this Wednesday, the teenager remained under intensive medical observation, with a stable progression despite the seriousness of his condition, as confirmed by the health authorities of Sancti Spíritus.
