Although the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel has insisted that his wife Lis Cuesta is not the First Lady of Cuba, she has indeed become one of the biggest laughingstocks of the regime, and each post on social media confirms it.
This time, Cuesta stirred up a new wave of criticism by speaking out about the rights of children and adolescents in a country where children have less and less access to food each day, suffer from blackouts, face school abandonment, and are exposed to child labor.
In her X account, Díaz-Canel's wife wrote: “This week we have been discussing the rights and responsibilities of our childhoods and adolescence; a perspective from Culture and Education. The topic is very challenging and exciting.”
The message was accompanied by images from the event in which they participated, titled “A Look from Culture at the Rights and Participation of Children and Adolescents in Revolution,” where they showcase their extensive array of "noble" titles: events coordinator for the Ministry of Culture, university lecturer, researcher, and diploma holder, as if the people were unaware that they occupy their position solely for being part of the dictatorial elite.
The post sparked immediate reactions among Cubans, who accuse it of cynicism and total disconnection from the reality of the island, where children grow up amid shortages, hunger, and a lack of state protection.
José Cemí (@CemiHolding) stated: “While you all gather, talk, and debate, with electricity, air conditioning, plenty of food, and ready transportation, Cuban children are dying of hunger.”
Mi Sos (@MiSos695068) wrote: "They need shelter and food. Without that, there is no education or culture because the brain cannot analyze. This is indeed a fascinating but also sad topic."
Nicanor O'Donnell (@DonelNicanor) recalled: “It's good to remember a day like today the schools in the countryside and child labor in #Cuba.”
Michael Cuban Myers (@cuban_myers) was more harsh: “Machi, how can you be so cynical? No one has seen you with the victims of the cyclone. What you care about are trips outside of Cuba and supporting everyone in the world except for Cubans. There is no one more miserable and petty than you.”
María Flores (@fl14946770) commented indignantly: “You are cynical. Just today, a one-year-old girl died due to lack of medical attention. There will be no place on this earth where you and your filthy husband, the tarru of Cuba, can hide.”
Alberto Pablo Enríquez (@CandeAlbert) mocked: “Childhood and adolescence suffering without medication, with 20 hours of blackout, without milk or bread, without quality teachers. But here is Lisi discussing her rights. Thank you for so much, Robolución!”
Valentino Bennington (@valeben1980) stated: “You have to have guts, you piece of trash. Disgusting dressed in luxury, adorned with Cartier, but underneath it's the same old story: misery and vulgarity.”
Lewandowski (@BVBCuba_96) wrote: “Childhood and adolescence, will you show your face? In a historical moment where there are more drugs than ever and children are abandoned, without milk, proteins, toys, or medicine. Shameful.”
Ernesto (@ernesto21982) commented: “All those meetings are for nothing. Children are dying due to a lack of medication, they go to school without sleep because of power outages, and they are poorly nourished because the dictatorship doesn't provide them with what they need to live.”
Ariadna (@AryPeaceofmind) reminded her: “You haven't even bothered to show up for your homeland, you pig. So many people are dying and you’re just playing at elegance. Disgusting and lacking aesthetic sense, with or without Cartier.”
Manolo Burumba (@manolo_burumba) joked: “I don’t know where you’re going to hide.”
