A 48-year-old man of Cuban descent, identified as Ariel Betancourt Ramírez, was stabbed to death this Saturday in Georgetown, Guyana, in what authorities describe as an apparent robbery that took place in broad daylight while the Cuban was walking to meet his wife.

According to the local newspaper Stabroek News, Betancourt was attacked around 2:10 p.m. on Middle Road, La Penitence. His relatives stated that he was wearing a gold chain that was missing after the attack.

A close friend, Juan Díaz, told the media that the Cuban man's wife works at a nearby factory and that they used to meet around that time to return home together. But this Saturday, just two blocks from their apartment, two individuals intercepted him, stabbed him, and escaped without a trace.

The journalist Travis Chase, from the HGP Nightly News, initially reported that the victim appeared to be a Spanish speaker involved in a violent robbery, and shortly thereafter confirmed that it was a Cuban citizen.

Chase detailed that Betancourt received two stab wounds, one in the chest and another in the left side, and died at the scene before he could receive medical assistance. His body was transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home while the investigations are underway.

Authorities recovered a bloodstained knife in a nearby drain, believed to be the murder weapon. Images from the CCTV system at the National Command Center captured two men of African descent approaching the victim on bicycles and then fleeing west; one of them allegedly discarded the weapon while escaping. So far, both remain at large.

Ariel's death adds to the atmosphere of concern experienced by the Cuban community in Guyana, a country that has become a migratory route, a temporary work location, or a destination for consular procedures in recent years.

In August of last year, the Cuban Pedro Alexander Frometa Slonchak, 34 years old, died after being shot multiple times inside a supermarket in Georgetown, in an incident still under investigation.

And weeks later, the death of Milena, a young Cuban who suffered complications after childbirth, once again flooded social media with messages of grief and concern about the situation of migrants in that country.
