The absence of a Stop sign, destroyed by Hurricane Melissa, caused an accident at the intersection of San Félix and Heredia streets, in Santiago de Cuba.

The accident occurred when “the driver of the car, who stated he was not from Santiago de Cuba, was unaware of the risk at the corner and did not stop upon reaching the intersection, continuing straight without realizing that a motorcycle with passengers was coming through the cross street,” according to a report by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

Mayeta Labrada stated that in the motorcycle where several people were traveling, "one of the passengers suffered minor injuries to her leg, although she assures that she is in good condition."

No serious injuries were reported.

"Here, all the cars and vehicles passing through don’t see the stop sign because it no longer exists, and they just go straight. There have been several accidents, but no one comes to fix the issue," a neighbor told the reporter.

The community demands that the municipal government or Traffic Department immediately reestablish the signage, before a greater tragedy occurs. In the meantime, residents continue to live in fear that the next victim could be a child, an elderly person, or anyone crossing the area, Mayeta explained.

At the end of November, an accident that occurred on Avenida Las Américas in Santiago de Cuba raised concerns among residents and passersby when a truck that was transporting gas cylinders overturned, causing a gathering of numerous onlookers in the area.

A few days earlier, an interprovincial bus lost control and ended up on the sidewalk, right next to the entrance of a company, on the central Escario street in Santiago de Cuba.

In October, it was reported that Cuba recorded  502 deaths in traffic accidents from January to August 2025, nearly 80% of the fatalities for that cause throughout the previous year, indicating a rise in mortality due to road incidents in the country.

The National Road Safety Commission reported this week that in the first eight months of the year, there were 5,025 accidents -41 more than in the same period of 2024-, resulting in 4,516 people being injured.

Last year, traffic accidents (7,507) resulted in a total of 634 fatalities and 6,613 injuries, figures lower than those of 2023.
