Eleven years ago, José Raúl Cepero left his hometown of Güines, in the province of Mayabeque, to pursue a future full of opportunities. His journey began through a student exchange program with Canada while he was in his final year of his Bachelor's degree in Tourism at the University of Havana.
What started as an academic experience turned into the starting point of a story of overcoming challenges that now inspires hundreds of Hispanic immigrants.
A chess player who learned to move pieces in life
Before numbers and finance, José Raúl was a professional chess player, a graduate of the Higher School of Training for High-Performance Athletes in Cuba.
The strategy, patience, and analysis he learned from the boards became the tools he would later apply in his professional and business career.
From Havana to FIU: a brilliant mind recognized in Florida
After a few years in the United States, José Raúl decided to reinvent himself. He passed the challenging entrance exam for the Accounting program at Florida International University (FIU), from which he graduated with honors.
That same year, his effort was recognized by the Florida Institute of CPAs (FICPA), which selected him among the brightest minds of the academic year, competing with students from over 20 universities.
