The president of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, stated this Tuesday in Oslo that behind Nicolás Maduro's regime are Cuba, Russia, Iran, China, and Hezbollah, whom he held responsible for supporting one of the most brutal dictatorships in Latin America.
The speech was delivered during the awarding of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was unable to attend the ceremony and entrusted her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, with reading her speech on her behalf.
Frydnes denounced that the Chavista regime “has learned from other authoritarian regimes” and that its international allies provide Caracas with “weapons, surveillance systems, and means of economic survival,” thereby strengthening a repressive structure that has plunged Venezuela “into a deep humanitarian and moral crisis.”
The Norwegian leader starkly described the human rights violations committed by the regime, including torture of minors, enforced disappearances, and the systematic persecution of dissent.
He stated that the crimes documented by the United Nations “constitute crimes against humanity” and demanded that Maduro accept the electoral results and step down from power.
The Nobel Committee also praised the peaceful resistance of the Venezuelan people and emphasized that democracy is “the most effective tool for ensuring peace.”
"The violence does not come from democratic activists, but from those who cling to power," Frydnes said, clearly alluding to the usurper of the Venezuelan government.
The message from the president of the Committee represents a direct condemnation of the international support axis that sustains Caracas, with direct mention of Havana, whose assistance in intelligence and repression has been cited by various organizations as a key factor in the survival of the Chavista regime.
The awarding of the Nobel Prize to María Corina Machado symbolizes global recognition of the democratic struggle in Venezuela and, at the same time, serves as a warning to Maduro's allies—among them Cuba—about the increasing international pressure against dictatorships that violate human rights and freedom in Latin America.
