The authorities arrested Navier Núñez Ramos for the murder of a 17-year-old girl in the municipality of Jovellanos (Matanzas).
The arrest took place at the "La Alcancía" farm, according to a post from the official page Con Todos la Victoria.
The victim, Heidi García Orosco, died after being attacked with a knife allegedly by her partner "during a passionate conflict."
The official statement indicates that the perpetrator was arrested and is facing legal proceedings for the crime of murder, while the authorities emphasized that “no reason can justify” an act of such magnitude and that “the law will take its course” to ensure that the crime does not go unpunished.
Cuban feminist organizations confirmed the identity of the victim and the seriousness of the case as it involves a minor.
The Gender Observatory Alas Tensas (OGAT) and the platform YoSíTeCreo in Cuba (YSTCC) stated that Heidi was a high school student and that she was still wearing the school uniform of the Pre-University Institute Urbano Pedro Pablo Rivera Cué when she was attacked.
According to the reports cited in the document, the attack occurred around two in the afternoon and took place inside the teenager's home.
After the attack, the alleged attacker fled, but was located by his father, who turned him over to the police hours later, according to information attributed to the platforms that verified the case.
The community is in shock over the crime. Ileana Álvarez, director of OGAT, stated that “the community and the family, especially her mother,” are deeply affected by the death of a teenager “who was very beloved in her surroundings.”
On social media, some users questioned how the arrest occurred, stating in comments that the detainee would not have been captured “immediately” and that, had his father not turned him in, “he would still be free,” in addition to calling for justice and denouncing the increase in violence.
I hope Navier pays as he deserves for momentarily ending Heidy's life; that's just unacceptable, gentleman. Honestly, I can't understand how someone can do something like that to a woman. I hope actions are taken against him. How long will the violence continue in this country? She didn't deserve that," wrote a person close to the victim.
The latest report from OGAT reveals that in 2024 76.8% of femicides were committed against women aged 15 to 45; while 17 of the 56 verified cases occurred in the age range of 15 to 30 years.
In fact, 55.4% of the recorded femicides in 2024 occurred in the victim's home or shared with the aggressor, a statistic that is echoed in Heidi's case.
