The renowned Cuban actor Luis Alberto García Novoa shared a unique message on social media regarding the aftereffects of chikungunya, a disease that has spread throughout Cuba in recent months.
“I'm deeply grateful to the affectionate and persistent Chikungunya because thanks to its aftermath (my eyelashes, nails, and the tips of some hairs hurt), I now know what it feels like and what it doesn't, when a human being achieves more than 100 years,” wrote the artist on Facebook.
The message reflects the difficult health situation the country is experiencing, where the increase in cases of chikungunya, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is causing alarm among the population.
The government acknowledged that it is an epidemic and admits that its official data on infections and deaths remain confusing and incomplete.
The virus has claimed lives, particularly among children and the elderly, in a context of hospital crisis and medication shortages in Cuba.
On social media, Cubans from various provinces report long lines at clinics and hospitals, with no access to adequate treatments. Many don’t even go to health centers and endure their illnesses alone at home, with limited resources and no medications.
"A disaster like this stimulates the fantasy and imagination of any actress or actor," García added, who often uses humor to comment on issues affecting Cuban society. His post generated thousands of supportive and empathetic reactions from followers both inside and outside of Cuba.
