A fire at a garbage dump was reported on the night of December 28 in the Rajayoga neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, while the area had been without electricity since 4:00 PM, as reported by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada on his social media.
The fire originated in the garbage dump located between buildings 2 and 3 of Rajayoga, in front of the Plaza, and generated a thick column of smoke that spread throughout the residential area. Residents in the vicinity alerted others to the danger posed by the flames, which were visible just a few meters from the buildings in total darkness due to the power outage.
The lack of public lighting and electricity in homes complicated visibility and heightened tension, especially among families with children and elderly individuals, due to the risk of fire spreading and inhalation of smoke.
So far, there has been no official information regarding the causes of the fire, nor about any potential material damage or affected individuals, as residents question the lack of prompt responses to a potentially dangerous situation.
Residents of Rajayoga also reported that makeshift dumps have become a recurring problem in the neighborhood, posing a constant risk to health and safety, a situation that worsens during the prolonged blackouts affecting the city.
The incident highlights once again the crisis of basic services in Santiago de Cuba, where the accumulation of garbage, power outages, and the lack of structural solutions continue to impact the daily life of the population.
