The US dollar closed the last day of the year at 435 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, according to the rate published on December 31 by elTOQUE.

The U.S. dollar maintains its strength against the peso, driven by the high demand from Cubans who rely on remittances and cash operations due to the scarcity of foreign currency in state banks and CADECA exchange houses. Despite the regime's efforts to contain inflation, the greenback remains the primary reference for daily transactions.

The euro, for its part, maintained a value of 480 CUP, consolidating itself as the most expensive currency in the informal market. Its constant increase reflects the loss of confidence in the Cuban peso and the preference for European currencies for travel and savings.

Meanwhile, the price of the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) plummeted this Wednesday. It is quoted at 400 CUP, which is 10 pesos less than the previous day.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The end of the year confirms the trend of depreciation of the Cuban peso and the sustained increase in the cost of foreign currencies.
