The Cuban actor and comedian Geonel Martín, best known for his character Gustavito, addressed the controversy that erupted on social media following an interview on the show La Familia Cubana, where a promotion summarized his words with the phrase: “I was happier in Cuba until I came to this country.”

In a video posted on his Facebook profile at the end of this year, Martín clarified that his statements were taken out of context and defended his right to speak honestly about his life on the island and in the United States.

"Of course I was happy in Cuba. Who wasn't happy in Cuba? But I came to the United States to be even happier, to be freer," he said.

The comedian explained that the controversy arose from the approach taken in promoting the show, which he believes aimed to generate views. "I think it was misdirected. I invite everyone to watch the full interview; it was spectacular," he noted.

“No I take back nothing. I said I was happy in Cuba, but here I am even happier,” stated the comedian.

Martín regretted the insults received on social media, some of which included offensive language.

“To those who offend me, I remind them that that image they criticize so much also brought you happiness, even in difficult times,” he said, recalling his time on the popular show Sabadazo and other classics of Cuban humor.

During his message, the actor insisted on separating personal happiness from politics, but acknowledged that "most Cubans were not and will not be happy while that government exists." "If we were more united, perhaps that dictatorship wouldn't be there now," he added.

From Fort Pierce, Florida, where he performed on the night of December 31, the comedian urged his followers to let go of grievances and focus on what truly matters: "Family is essential. No government can compete with family. Let's be happy, nothing else."

Martín concluded his message by thanking his audience for the affection he has received over the years and reminded them that his mission remains the same: “To make people laugh and spread happiness, wherever I am.”
