On social media, shocking images are circulating of a group of Cuban farmers roasting a rodent over a wood fire for dinner on New Year's Eve, and the scene has stunned hundreds of users.

The video was shared by the Cuban content creator Hermes Yasell (@hermesyasell_cubaface) on Instagram. In the background, men can be heard commenting that it is a curiel, although several internet users have pointed out that it could be a small jutía or even a large rat.

The images, which quickly went viral, have sparked a wave of comments expressing sadness and concern about the extreme poverty many families in Cuba are experiencing.

"That hurts, eating that on New Year's Eve because there's nothing else," wrote a user.

The video has become a symbol of the food crisis the island is experiencing, characterized by a shortage of basic products, uncontrolled inflation, and a loss of purchasing power. An increasing number of Cubans are forced to resort to unusual foods or hunting to survive.

The scene reflects the decline in living standards in rural areas, where the lack of resources and absence of assistance programs worsen the misery. "It's sad, but that is the reality for many," commented another internet user.
