The President of the United States, Donald Trump, warned on Saturday the Venezuelan officials and military who still remain loyal to the dictator Nicolás Maduro that their future “will be very bleak” if they continue to support the overthrown regime.
In statements to FOX News, Trump stated that “if they remain loyal, the future is really bad, very bad for them,” while asserting that “Maduro was a dictator that the people hated.”
The leader emphasized that, following the capture of the chavista leader in Caracas, “American flags are waving in the streets,” which in his view demonstrates the public support for the intervention of the United States and the rejection of the old regime by the Venezuelans.
Trump emphasized that his administration "will not tolerate impunity" for high-ranking officials involved in crimes and corruption, and reiterated that all of Maduro's accomplices will be identified and prosecuted under U.S. law.
The president's warning comes as Washington outlines the next steps in the Venezuelan political transition following the decline of chavismo.
The United States government filed a federal indictment on Saturday in the Southern District Court of New York against Nicolás Maduro, his wife Cilia Flores, and several high-ranking officials, for their alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking and corruption conspiracy.
