Cuban reggaeton artists Leandro Medina “El Insurrecto” and Leamsy Izquierdo, artistically known as “La Figura”, were transferred to different detention centers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the United States, following weeks of complaints about the inhumane conditions at the Alligator Alcatraz center.
According to official records from ICE, Leandro Medina “El Insurrecto” was transferred to the Adams County Detention Center, located at 20 Hobo Fork Road, Natchez, Mississippi (MS 39120).
On his part, Leamsy Izquierdo “La Figura” was relocated to the Krome Detention Center, in South Florida.
Both artists had remained detained in the controversial facility known as Alligator Alcatraz, where Leamsy “La Figura” publicly denounced the extreme conditions and mistreatment that, he claimed, the detainees were subjected to.
"I haven't showered in four days, there's no water, no toothpaste, they don't let you out for even a minute. We're in a cage with lights on 24 hours a day and the mosquitoes seem like elephants," said the musician during a phone call that went viral on social media, sparking outrage among his followers and figures in the Cuban exile community.
In that same message, La Figura reported extreme cold, lack of medical care, and alleged mistreatment by the staff.
“Everyone in a t-shirt, shivering. This is hell,” the artist said, who remains in federal custody due to a immigration hold order after being accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and simple assault in Miami-Dade County.
According to sources consulted by CiberCuba, the transfers are in response to administrative procedures by ICE and do not involve a judicial decision.
However, human rights organizations and Cuban activists in exile celebrated the measure as a sign of response to the reports of abuse in Alligator Alcatraz.
The Adams County Detention Center in Mississippi is one of the largest facilities in the federal system and has been the subject of investigations for alleged human rights violations in previous years.
On its part, the Krome Center in Miami-Dade often houses migrants awaiting hearings before immigration judges.
Both Cuban artists remain in ICE custody while their immigration status and potential deportation proceedings are being evaluated. Neither the Department of Justice nor ICE has issued official statements regarding their cases.
The allegations by Leamsy “La Figura” regarding Alligator Alcatraz sparked a wave of solidarity on social media and reignited the debate over the conditions of migrants detained in federal centers, particularly those with immigration hold orders following criminal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Cuban community in the United States closely monitors the situation of the two musicians, who are part of a generation of urban artists with extensive careers both inside and outside the Island.
