The Cuban regime held an event this Saturday at the José Martí Antimperialist Tribune (Havana), called to condemn what it described as an “imperialist military aggression” by the United States against Venezuela.
In an event where chants of "down with imperialism" were heard and the "kidnapping" of President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores was denounced, regime spokesperson Raúl Torres joined in and shouted without thinking: "Down with imperialism, damn it."
During an intervention from the podium, Torres called to “once again say down with imperialism!” and sang songs about Latin America and the Cuban regime.
Díaz-Canel insisted in his speech that "imperialism" will not abandon its "essence" of "plundering," "lying," and "killing," and he argues that rejecting it is "the only way" to defend "the life of Cuba and the life of the planet."
In addition, it states that Cuban professionals “cannot help but feel” “repulsion and horror” and reiterate the denouncement of the “kidnapping” of Maduro “who was democratically elected” and of “companion Cilia Flores.”
The intervention concluded with a call for "unity," the defense of "peace," and the "sovereignty of the peoples," ending with another slogan: "Down with Yankee imperialism!" followed by cheers.
The call for the event —scheduled for 10:00 a.m.— was announced by the Presidency of Cuba on the social media platform X, "a few hours after" the confirmation of Maduro's capture following a U.S. military incursion in Caracas "on January 3rd."
Miguel Díaz-Canel had previously condemned the offensive in X, calling it a "criminal attack" and "state terrorism," while reiterating support for chavismo with the slogan "Homeland or Death! We Will Overcome!"
