The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel described the announced sale of weapons from the United States government to Taiwan as a “serious provocation,” and reiterated Cuba's support for the People's Republic of China's stance on the sovereignty of the territory.
In a message posted on his Facebook account, Díaz-Canel stated that Washington's decision constitutes a violation of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while reaffirming Havana's “unequivocal” support for the principle of “one China”.
"The principle of one China recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory," the leader stated, reiterating Beijing's official position regarding the self-governing island.
Díaz-Canel's statements come amid rising tensions between the United States and China, fueled by Washington's military cooperation with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a rebel province.
The Cuban regime has historically maintained a stance aligned with China on international political matters, especially in conflicts that pit its strategic allies against the United States.
Sale of weapons
The United States announced the sale of weapons to Taiwan as part of an agreement valued at over 10 billion dollars, according to the agency AP, which added that the package includes medium-range missiles, howitzers, and drones, a measure that is sure to directly irritate China.
The aforementioned outlet added that if approved by Congress, it would be the largest arms package from the United States to Taiwan, surpassing the total amount of $8.4 billion in arms sales during Joe Biden's administration.
