Who is Cilia Flores really? The figure that Chavismo presents as the "faithful wife," but who faces serious charges in the U.S.

While chavismo attempts to turn the capture of Nicolás Maduro into an epic tale of sentiment, the figure of his wife, Cilia Flores, returns to the center of international debate, marked by the contradiction between the “love and loyalty” narrative promoted by official media and a judicial record that implicates her in drug trafficking, corruption, and violence.

The director of Telesur, Patricia Villegas, described the detention of the Venezuelan leader and his wife on Telegram as a "kidnapping" carried out by "soldiers of the empire," and portrayed Flores as a woman who "did not allow" them to take only her husband, using "the strength of her love" to accompany him.

In his account, the moment was elevated to a "love story" built amidst political persecution and alleged violations of rights.

However, outside of that epic narrative, the picture that emerges from the United States is very different.

According to Telemundo 51, Cilia Adela Flores de Maduro, 69 years old, is not just the wife of the Chavista leader. Trained as a lawyer and a key figure in Venezuelan power for over two decades, she served as a deputy in the National Assembly and became the first woman to preside over that legislative body in 2006. From there, she promoted reforms that shaped the country's financial direction and solidified her influence within Chavismo.

She also served as the Attorney General of the Republic from 2012 to 2013, during Hugo Chávez's term, whom she legally defended after the failed coup d'état of 1992. Following Maduro's rise to power, she took on an even more prominent role, self-identifying as the "first fighter" of the revolution.

But her political career has been marred by multiple scandals. For years, she was accused of nepotism after several of her relatives appeared on the payroll of the National Assembly while she was a deputy. This was compounded by the case of the so-called “nephew drug traffickers”, Efraín Antonio Campo Flores and Francisco Flores de Freitas, Cilia Flores' nephew and godson, who were arrested in 2015 for conspiring to introduce large quantities of cocaine into the United States.

According to reports from Telemundo 51 and The Associated Press (AP), the Southern District Attorney's Office of New York is now directly accusing Cilia Flores of engaging in activities related to drug trafficking, accepting bribes, and acting as an intermediary between drug traffickers and high-ranking Venezuelan officials.

The accusation includes allegations of having received payments for facilitating meetings with the then head of Venezuela's anti-drug agency, Néstor Reverol, and of participating in networks of violence to settle drug trafficking debts.

Investigations cited by the Peruvian media Trome also indicate that three of Flores' children, whom Maduro acknowledges as his own, have been linked by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to illicit businesses related to drug trafficking.

This Saturday, Maduro and Flores were transferred to New York on a U.S. military plane, under strict custody, to face four charges related to narcoterrorism and cocaine trafficking, as confirmed by U.S. media.

Both must appear before federal court in a process that puts an end, at least for now, to the image of impunity that Chavismo cultivated for years.

Thus, while Caracas and its allied media insist on portraying Cilia Flores as the “faithful wife” who does not abandon her partner even in adversity, the courts in the United States present her as a central figure in a criminal structure that, according to prosecutors, operated from the very heart of Venezuelan power.
