The Government of Venezuela issued an official statement accusing the United States of carrying out a military aggression against its territory and population, but announced actions to normalize diplomatic relations.
The statement comes in a context of tensions that intensified following the events of January 3, when a series of explosions hit the capital Caracas and resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
In the official text released this Friday, the Venezuelan government described the U.S. actions as "a very serious military aggression" that violates the principles of International Law and the United Nations Charter, and called for condemnation and solidarity from the international community regarding what it sees as a violation of national sovereignty.
Nevertheless, despite these accusations, the Bolivarian government —led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez— announced that exploratory contacts have begun with representatives from the U.S. to assess the potential normalization of diplomatic relations.
This would include the reinstatement of consular missions in both Caracas and Washington, for which an official visit from a representative of Washington was announced.
The official statement emphasizes that, despite the magnitude of what it describes as aggression and the alleged human and infrastructural losses, Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to peace and dialogue.
The announced diplomatic process is based on principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and recognition of national sovereignty, the document emphasizes.
According to the Venezuelan government, this initiative aims to put an end to decades of hostility, sanctions, and diplomatic confrontations, advance a bilateral cooperation agenda, and contribute to regional peace and stability.
The invitation to collaborate in this endeavor was extended to all nations of the world.
The attack on Venezuela and the capture of Maduro have intensified international attention on the situation in the country, amidst military and political movements with significant repercussions in the hemisphere, creating a complex scenario in the relations between Caracas and Washington.
