The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, ignited a new controversy amidst the sea of geopolitical changes in Latin America after militarily capturing the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Through his account on Truth Social, Trump reshared a message from a user claiming that the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio -son of Cuban immigrants- would be "president of Cuba," and added an approving comment: "Sounds good to me!"

The original tweet was posted on January 8 by a user named Cliff Smith, whose social media biography describes him as a "conservative Californian."

The content of the message, accompanied by a laughing emoji, suggests a scenario in which Rubio, a prominent figure in U.S. politics and a staunch critic of the authoritarian regimes in Cuba and Venezuela, would assume the presidency of Cuba.

Trump did not provide further context, but his acceptance reaction quickly went viral, making this unprecedented post widely shared, even though there is no evidence that Washington has such a plan or official policy.

The publication comes at a tense time for the Cuban regime.

Following the U.S. operation in Venezuela on January 3, which resulted in the capture of Maduro and left dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban soldiers dead, the U.S. Administration has intensified its political and diplomatic pressure in the region.

This Sunday, Trump warned Cuba about its historical ties with Caracas and demanded that Havana "reach an agreement" with the United States before it’s too late, amid economic sanctions and the cutoff of Venezuelan oil that used to support the fragile Cuban economy.

"There will be no more oil or money for Cuba. Nothing! I strongly recommend that you reach an agreement before it is too late," the leader said on Truth Social.
