The President of Mexico proposes to act as a mediator between Cuba and the United States

Amid the growing tension between Washington and Havana, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum opened the door to a possible mediating role between Cuba and the United States, just as the Cuban regime faces one of its periods of greatest political and economic isolation in decades.

During her morning conference, Sheinbaum stated that her government would be willing to serve as a "communication vehicle" between both nations, as long as there is willingness from both sides.

His statements come in a context marked by a direct warning from U.S. President Donald Trump to the Cuban regime, urging them to "make a deal before it's too late," following the capture of Nicolás Maduro and the collapse of Venezuelan support that for years sustained Havana with oil and financing.

The Mexican leader downplayed the criticisms regarding the shipment of crude oil to Cuba and dismissed the internal impact of that policy. “The people of Mexico don't seem to be very concerned,” she stated, assuring that there is no fuel shortage or price increases.

She also emphasized that this is a "historic" aid that did not begin with her government, and that she is willing to make the information about the volumes and conditions of the supply transparent, although without specifying dates.

However, beyond the energy debate, Sheinbaum's message is significant due to the timing of its delivery. Cuba is experiencing a deep crisis, worsened by the loss of its main regional ally and under the threat of new U.S. sanctions.

Trump has made it clear that the regime's room for maneuver is shrinking, while Díaz-Canel denies any political negotiations with Washington and seeks refuge in the discourse of “sovereignty” and the embargo.
