The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that his administration will impose a 25% tariff on any country that conducts business with the Islamic Republic of Iran, a measure that will take effect immediately and aims to increase international pressure on Tehran.
"Effective immediately, any country that does business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a 25% tariff on any trade it conducts with the United States. This order is final and conclusive," Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social.
The decision comes in a context of growing tensions between Washington and Tehran, characterized by the Iranian regime's repression of anti-government protests and recent warnings from the White House regarding a potential more forceful intervention against the Iranian government.
According to data from the economic platform Trading Economics, China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq are among Iran's main trading partners, countries that could be directly affected by the new U.S. tariff policy.
The threat of trade sanctions reinforces the maximum pressure strategy pushed by Trump, who has reiterated that the United States will not allow Iran to continue funding activities that are deemed destabilizing for the region or human rights violations without facing severe economic consequences.
