While most residents of Sancti Spíritus were bidding farewell to 2025 with preparations and celebrations, a medical team from the municipality of Trinidad was engaged in a fierce battle for the life of Bárbara Lima León, a 32-year-old woman with a full-term pregnancy who suffered a high-risk obstetric complication.

According to Radio Sancti Spíritus, the patient arrived in shock at the municipal hospital, which immediately activated the provincial maternal commission.

Dr. García González, head of the maternal and child health program at the Provincial Health Directorate, reported that a complete team was sent from the provincial center to the hospital with all the necessary resources, which is quite incredible given the scarcity faced by healthcare facilities.

"We brought a gasometer, ultrasound equipment, and the patient spent two days in the operating room. It was intensive therapy right in the operating room of the municipal hospital of Trinidad," explained the specialist.

Sadly, the patient lost the fetus due to a hematoma—likely a retroplacental hematoma—but the doctors were able to stabilize her after two days of continuous interventions, restoring hope for her to become pregnant again in the future.

"The patient was saved despite losing the fetus due to the hematoma. She has a favorable recovery, but it was something we are not accustomed to, transferring from a provincial hospital to a municipal one with everything, including the transport and the support we received from all the institutions," he emphasized.

"Today we can say that he was saved. It was an intense experience, a collective effort from the entire health system," García González added.

The doctor also highlighted the personal sacrifice of one of the intensivists who participated in the operation.

“The first intensivist we sent that morning had his grandmother very ill in the hospital, and yet he went to attend to the patient. His actions were crucial in saving her. The next day, when his replacement arrived, we had to inform him that his grandmother had passed away,” he recounted.

The case, which occurred in the final hours of the year, has become an example of professional dedication and medical vocation in Sancti Spíritus, a truly commendable fact considering that most doctors work under conditions of extreme scarcity

"While many were counting the minutes until the toast, a group of white coats was sustaining the life of a woman who was on the brink of death," concluded the provincial official.
