The Cuban content creator David Domínguez Francisco, known on social media as dvd.francisco, shared a video in which he revealed the historical origins of several popular names in Cuba that, as he explained, “are not modern inventions.”

In his post, the young man began by clarifying that some of the most common names on the Island have existed for centuries and come from languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, or Italian.

For example, Yasmani has an Arabic origin and is the masculine variant of Yasmin, a word that literally means "jasmine flower."

Meanwhile, Yosvani comes from the Italian Giovanni —the equivalent of Juan— which means "mercy of God." From its feminine form, Giovanna, other names such as Yovanna or Yovanka are derived, all with the same spiritual meaning.

The video also mentions the names Yaser and Yasel, which, although they are similar, have different origins: the first, ending in "r", comes from Arabic and means "rich" or "prosperous"; the second, ending in "l", derives from Hebrew and its translation would be "God's distribution."

Another name of biblical origin is Jordan, from which variants such as Yordanka and Yordanis emerge, all related to the Jordan River, an important symbol in the Middle East.

Among male names, Osmani stands out for its Turkish-Arabic roots, linked to Osman. This name has several meanings, including "young serpent," "bird of prey," or "divine protector."

In terms of sweeter or more peculiar names, Shabeli is a childlike or diminutive form of Isabel, a kind of phonetic nickname that, according to Domínguez, may have originated from the way a child pronounces the original name.

He also mentioned Shetling, a variant of Shirley, which comes from Old English and means "bright meadow" or "luminous prairie."

Finally, the creator explained the case of Yamila, Yumila, or Yamile, names of Arabic origin that share the meaning of “beautiful.”

"If you have a complicated Cuban name, leave it in the comments and I'll look up its origin," concluded dvd.francisco, who invited his followers to join the conversation.
