The Cuban-American congresswoman María Elvira Salazar celebrated on Monday the historic achievement of Fernando Mendoza, son of an exiled Cuban family, who became the national champion of college football and winner of the Heisman Trophy 2025, the most prestigious individual award in college sports in the United States.
"A son of Miami, raised with the Cuban values of discipline, sacrifice, and hard work, who makes his city proud on the national stage," wrote Salazar on X while publicly congratulating the athlete.
Mendoza led Indiana University to a perfect season and the national title, after defeating the University of Miami 27-21 in the final held right in South Florida.
With his performance, he not only secured the championship, but also reaffirmed his status as one of the great figures in college football.
The quarterback made history by becoming the first player from Indiana and the first Cuban-American to win the Heisman Trophy, an award that recognizes the most outstanding athlete in the country. His leadership, accuracy in throwing touchdown passes, and ability to respond in crucial moments made him the face of an unforgettable campaign for the Hoosiers.
Beyond sports, Fernando Mendoza's rise has been seen as a cultural symbol for the Cuban-American community, particularly in Miami, where his story embodies the perseverance and success of new generations shaped by the legacy of exile and the opportunities in sports in the United States.
In fact, Mario Cristobal, the coach of the University of Miami, also has Cuban roots. For many, these victories confirm that the Cuban-American dream is not only still alive, but also continues to reach historic milestones.
