The Union Electrica (UNE) reported this Wednesday that the electrical service in Cuba was again affected during the 24 hours of Tuesday, due to a generation deficit that continues to rise.

According to the official note published by the state company, “the highest impact due to generation capacity deficit yesterday was 1933 MW at 6:30 PM, exceeding the planned output due to the shutdown of the Melones and Regla plants”.

La UNE detalló que la production of the 38 new photovoltaic solar parks alcanzó los 1736 MWh, con una potencia máxima de 328 MW en el horario del mediodía. Sin embargo, el aporte no fue suficiente para cubrir la demanda nacional.

Current state of the system

Until 06:00 hours this Wednesday, the availability of the National Electric System (SEN) was 1195 MW against a demand of 2014 MW, resulting in an impact of 819 MW. By noon, the UNE estimated an impact of 1200 MW.

Incidents and units out of service

The main reported malfunctions correspond to Unit 5 of the CTE Mariel, Unit 3 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Unit 6 of Nuevitas, Unit 2 of the CTE Felton, and Units 3 and 5 of the CTE Antonio Maceo. Unit 2 of the CTE Santa Cruz and Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Cienfuegos remain under maintenance.

The limitations in thermal generation amount to 593 MW out of service, the entity stated.

Forecast for peak hours

The UNE anticipates that during peak demand hours, unit 5 of the CTE Renté, currently "in the startup process", will come online with a capacity of 65 MW. Nonetheless, the estimated deficit remains high.

“With this forecast for the peak, a capacity of 1260 MW is expected with a maximum demand of 3230 MW, resulting in a deficit of 1970 MW. Therefore, if the anticipated conditions are maintained, a shortfall of 2000 MW is predicted during this time”, stated the note from the state-owned company.

Prolonged blackouts in Havana

For its part, the Havana Electric Company reported that in the capital "the electric service was affected for 17:14 hours" on Tuesday, with a peak disruption of 334 MW at 2:30 p.m., and full restoration at 10:34 p.m.

The entity specified that “due to low availability in base generation, it was not possible to meet the scheduled plan”, which forced a reduction of 100 MW due to emergency. At the end of its statement, “6 Blocks (189 MW) were affected”.

The company warned that, “if the availability conditions of the SEN do not improve, it is expected that it will not be possible to meet the reported schedule, and Blocks and Circuits will be affected by EMERGENCY”.
