A tragedy of extreme violence shook the Cuban community in the state of Missouri days before the end of the year when a man killed his ex-partner (who was also the mother of his two children) and the woman's current partner, before taking his own life.
The incident is being investigated by the authorities as a double homicide-suicide of a passionate nature.
The victims were identified as Elizabeth Hernández Sánchez, 33 years old, and Yeisir Fuster Concepción, 42 years old.
The assailant was Randys Miguel Ramírez Díaz, Elizabeth's ex-partner, who took his own life a few hours after carrying out the attack.
Deadly attack while traveling together
According to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, the violent incident occurred between 10:30 PM and 11:00 PM on Monday, December 29, near South Stracks Church Road and State Highway M.
The agents responded after receiving a call reporting a "man down," and upon arriving at the scene, they found two individuals with fatal gunshot wounds inside a car.
Authorities confirmed that Elizabeth Hernández-Sánchez and Yeisir Fuster were traveling together when they were attacked, and that both worked alongside the assailant.
Hours later, in the early hours of Tuesday, investigators located a vehicle of interest at a travel center near Interstate I-70.
When trying to make contact with the occupant, he fired inside the car and died on the scene.
He was later identified as Randys Ramírez.
Previous threats and passionate connection
The police confirmed that a week before the crime, Ramírez had threatened the couple with taking their lives. That prior incident is now a central part of the ongoing investigation.
The prior emotional connection between the woman and the killer is considered key to understanding the motive behind the crime, authorities have confirmed.
Origin of the victims
Elizabeth Hernández-Sánchez and Randys Ramírez were from Sancti Spíritus.
Yeisir Fuster Concepción was originally from the municipality of Céspedes, Camagüey, although he had lived in Ciego de Ávila before emigrating to the United States five years ago.
Six children are left orphaned
The tragedy left six children orphaned. Elizabeth had three: the two youngest are from her marriage to Randys, and the oldest is a child from a previous relationship.
On the other hand, several users on social media claim that Yeisir was the father of three girls.
Elizabeth's sister opened an account on GoFundMe to raise funds primarily to cover funeral expenses and to confront the new reality for the minors.
"Elizabeth leaves behind three children who are now facing a very difficult reality after this unexpected loss," stated Elizabeta Hernández Sánchez.
"Any help, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated. If you can't donate, we ask that you help us by sharing..." he added.
Shock and wake-up call
The journalist Javier Díaz, from Univisión, who reported the case on Facebook, stated that this incident highlights the violence with firearms, especially among Cuban immigrants who, he said, do not always have the culture of responsibility that comes with carrying a weapon.
Authorities confirmed that there is no threat to the community, that no agents or bystanders were injured, and that anyone with additional information can contact the Warren County Sheriff's Office at 636-456-4332.
