The young Cuban @julioserradet, now residing in Brazil, has touched the hearts of thousands on TikTok with an emotional video dedicated to his grandmother, following the news of her passing. In his post, Julio shared images of some of his happiest memories with her: dancing, joking, taking care of her, and sharing those everyday moments that have now become treasures, before his departure from Cuba.
“I write with tears in my eyes because my greatest fear about leaving for another country has always been not being able to see you before you left”, he expressed in the text accompanying the video. “It’s very hard news that you are no longer here, my dear, especially to hear it from people who are not even my family. But I promise I will fulfill everything I promised.”
Julio, visibly affected, confessed that he was never prepared to face a loss like this far from home. “I know that you'll be watching over me from up there. I was never ready for this because one is never prepared for goodbyes. Rest in peace, my dear mother,” he added.
The video reflects the duality experienced by many Cubans living away from their homeland: the joy of memories that sustain them and the pain of the distance that separates. Its publication, which has already garnered thousands of comments and reactions, has struck a chord among those who recognize the same fear of not being able to say goodbye to their loved ones. "Your grandmother is proud of you," "What a beautiful way to remember her," "No one understands that pain until they experience it," wrote some users.
For Julio and many emigrants, physical borders do not erase the ties of the heart. In his message, there is not only sadness but also gratitude and a promise: to move forward, honoring the memory of those who have always accompanied him, even from afar.
