"If Cuba were free tomorrow... would you return to stay or just to embrace your roots?"
With this phrase, a young Cuban identified as @lissy_finds_shop started a TikTok video that has gone viral among the Cuban community both on and off the Island.
In the clip, which has garnered thousands of views and comments, the creator poses a question that resonates deeply with many émigrés: should one return or not return if freedom finally arrives in Cuba?
"If you are Cuban, answer me with total honesty. If Cuba were free, tell me if you would return to start everything from scratch or if you would just go to hug your family and everything you left behind," the young woman says in a measured tone, visibly emotional.
His reflection continues:
"I personally believe that there is no right answer, because each Cuban carries a different story. What is very true is that Cuba is not just a place; Cuba lives within us, no matter where we are. And only God and we know that we didn't emigrate because we wanted to; we did it because we had no other choice."
The video has sparked a wave of reactions among Cubans from all over the world. Many share a sense of longing and pain, but also hope for a future where they can return to a Cuba free from repression and poverty.
In the comments, there are plenty of messages filled with gratitude and tears.
"You made me cry," wrote a user from Madrid. Another Cuban in Miami commented, "I would return, but not to live; I would go back to say goodbye to everything I once dreamed of."
The post, more than just a viral video, has become an emotional mirror of the Cuban exile: a reminder that, even far away, Cuba continues to live in the hearts of those who had to leave.
