A winter storm that will affect millions of people in the United States from next Friday until Sunday threatens to cause delays and cancellations in air travel.

In light of this situation, American Airlines and Delta Airlines have announced special policies that allow passengers to reschedule their flights without incurring change fees.

American Airlines informs on its website that when bad weather or other uncontrollable events affect travel plans, customers may have the option to change their dates at no additional cost.

The airline assured that its team is working around the clock to assist passengers and will notify those affected via email or through the mobile app.

In the case of American, the fee waiver applies if the passenger meets several conditions: they must be traveling on a flight operated by the airline, have a reservation in any fare class —including basic fare—, have purchased the ticket before January 19, 2026, and have a trip scheduled between January 23 and January 25.

Additionally, the new flight must be rescheduled between January 21 and January 28, 2026, without changing the city of origin or destination, and maintaining the same cabin or paying the corresponding difference.

American also clarified that changes must be made before Sunday, January 25, and that the rescheduled trip must be completed within one year from the original ticket date, although a fare difference may apply.

Travelers can make the exchange directly on the website or the app, and if they are unable to do it online, they can call 800-633-3711 for assistance in Spanish.

For its part, Delta Airlines announced a similar policy.

The company explained that due to the upcoming winter conditions, it will allow its customers with existing reservations to change their flights without additional charges.

"We closely monitor the forecasts to determine the necessary adjustments to flight schedules," the airline stated on its website.

Delta indicated that passengers can manage their changes through Delta.com or the mobile app.

Additionally, he reminded that if a flight is canceled or a delay causes a connection to be missed, the company will take care of rebooking passengers on the next available flight.

According to the airline, if the trip is rescheduled to January 28th or earlier, in the same class as the original booking, no fare difference charge will apply.

However, if the change involves a different type of service or is made after that date, a difference may apply.

Both companies recommend that passengers frequently check the status of their flight and stay attentive to notifications via email or on their mobile phones, where they will be informed as early as possible about any schedule changes.
