After more than a year of testing and adapting to the complex road conditions in South Florida, Waymo's fully autonomous vehicles (or robotaxis) began transporting passengers this Thursday on the streets of Miami, Florida, according to Telemundo.
Since November 2024, the company has been working on recognizing the urban environment of the city, including bridges, residential neighborhoods, and areas with high pedestrian traffic. During that time, more than 10,000 people registered on a waiting list to access the service.
"Waymo is a company focused on autonomous vehicles. We offer fully autonomous rides in comfortable electric vehicles, and we are very excited to be in Miami," explained Franklin Trujillo, the company's Marketing Programs Director, according to the cited source.
With this launch, Miami becomes the sixth city where Waymo enables its service to the public. Rides can be requested through the company's mobile app and will have a cost comparable to other ride-sharing platforms. The service will initially cover an area of approximately 60 square miles.
The vehicles are equipped with an advanced security system that includes 29 cameras, six radars, and five LiDAR sensors—technology that enables real-time detection and mapping of the environment, enhancing autonomous navigation and accident prevention.
