The Cuban presenter Carlos Otero expressed his deep sorrow following the death of the singer Alfredo Rodríguez, one of the most beloved voices in Cuban music.

In statements made to Martí Noticias, Otero recalled his friend as “a true example of a 100 percent artist” and an individual of integrity in both his professional and personal life.

"Alfredo was a good father, a good son, a good friend. So you can imagine the level of friendship we had. I believe it is an entirely irreparable loss. Alfredo was an example for many artists; I wish the new generations would behave and act at the level of the great stars we had in Cuba, including Alfredo Rodríguez," said the visibly moved host.

Alfredo Rodríguez passed away on January 22, 2026, in Miami, where he had lived for years with his family. The news of his death has triggered a wave of condolence messages on social media, where fans and colleagues remember his talent, humility, and memorable performances.

Otero learned the news just a few minutes before the interview: “I’m still in shock. I was friends with his whole family, with his dad, with his mom Celina, with his wife Mayra, and with his sons, Alfredito and Daniel.”

"There is sorrow among his friends, among his coworkers, among his colleagues, and especially among his audience, who for many years regarded him as the most popular male singer in Cuba. Alfredo was always true to his music, true to his principles, and true to his audience," Otero added.

The host, who was scheduled to appear that same night on a live show, confessed that it was difficult for him to maintain his spirits after the loss.

“I don’t know how I’m going to stand on stage tonight to entertain people, but as he once said, sometimes the curtain falls, the applause remains, and life has to go on.”

"Light and countless blessings for that spirit that flies very high. Alfredo Rodríguez was a strong believer in God and the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, and I know that God will have him in a very special place," concluded Carlos Otero, filled with emotion.
