The Cuban-American congressman Carlos Giménez issued a strong warning to the Mexican government regarding its oil shipments to the Cuban dictatorship.

He stated that Washington will not tolerate what he termed "a betrayal" while the free trade agreement with the United States is being renegotiated.

In a message posted on his X account, the Republican legislator from Florida wrote: “For years, we have demanded the cessation of all oil shipments from Mexico to the dictatorship in Cuba. The Mexican government is undermining U.S. policy, and we will not tolerate this great betrayal while we renegotiate our free trade agreement.”

Giménez's statement comes amid the growing international debate about Mexico's relationship with the authoritarian regime in Cuba.

Carlos Giménez, one of the most active Cuban-American congressmen in matters of policy towards the island, reiterated that the Donald Trump administration will maintain a strong stance against countries that "financially support dictatorships hostile to freedom in the hemisphere."

Her statements come on the very day that the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, defended the shipments of oil to Cuba, describing them as a "sovereign decision" that addresses both national energy policy and humanitarian concerns.

During her morning press conference , the president explained that Pemex determines the conditions and timing of crude oil deliveries, within the framework of decisions that Mexico makes independently.

"As we have said, it is a sovereign decision and Pemex makes its own decisions," he stated before the media.

Sheinbaum stated that the energy cooperation with Havana is not a recent development, but rather part of a policy sustained by several Mexican governments.

"Cuba has been under a blockade for far too many years, and that blockade has caused shortages on the island. Mexico has always been supportive, and Mexico will continue to be supportive," he emphasized.

Despite the journalists' insistence during the conference, Sheinbaum avoided clarifying whether Mexico will continue its oil shipments to Cuba in the coming days.

The president did not confirm or deny the continuation of operations and merely reiterated that it is a “sovereign decision,” in which Pemex and the federal government act according to their own criteria, contractual obligations, and humanitarian considerations, without providing more details about the immediate future of the offices.

"It is decided at the moment when it is necessary," Sheinbaum emphasized.
