The cost of living in Miami continues to soar, pushing many young people and adults to continue living with their families, as they cannot afford their own housing.
According to a report from the Miami Herald, monthly expenses in South Florida average around $5,000, with rents easily exceeding $1,500, while wages do not increase at the same pace.
Vinicius Pérez, 26 years old, is one of many facing this reality. He arrived from Venezuela in 2023 and lives with his mother and brother in Kendall.
The young man tried to become independent, but the cost of apartments made it impossible.
"The cost of living is so high that it's difficult to live alone," he explained. After suffering an accident while working, he lost his savings and had to start over, relying on his family to move forward.
Another case is that of Damian Hapke, a 25-year-old entrepreneur who lives with his mother and his partner while he grows his insurance business.
This young man admits that the lack of privacy is challenging, but he affirms that staying at home allows him to save money and avoid debt.
For many residents in Miami, independence is not a choice, but an unattainable luxury despite having relative job stability.
