The winter storm Gianna is causing delays and cancellations of flights at Miami International Airport (MIA), which has advised passengers to check the status of their flight directly with their airline before heading to the terminal.

In a public alert, the airport also warned that record temperatures are expected on Sunday and recommended that employees and workers at MIA dress warmly and allow extra time to arrive at the airport, as weather impacts on operations continue.

In her message, MIA thanked travelers for their patience "as we face these weather-related challenges" and urged them to stay safe and informed during a weekend when South Florida is experiencing a significant drop in temperature.

According to the notice, the key recommendations for travelers are to check the flight status with the airline before heading to the airport.

On the other hand, they request additional time to be allocated for the transfer to MIA, especially for those who work there.

They recommend as an important element, dressing warmly for the expected cold and the record temperatures forecasted for Sunday.

The airport announcement coincides with a forecast of unusually low temperatures in South Florida—including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach—with Sunday morning expected to be the coldest period.

Minimum temperatures will be in the mid-30s °F, with a wind chill that could drop to 20 °F (-6 Celsius), in addition to a Freeze Watch issued for portions of the region.

This condition could extend until Monday for portions of South Florida.

In light of this situation, authorities and firefighters have shared recommendations to prevent emergencies, protect vulnerable individuals, pets, and plants, and avoid incidents involving heating equipment.
