The National Staff of Civil Defense of Cuba issued a “Early Warning Notice” due to the in the western part of the country, with the arrival of a new cold front that will reinforce the existing winter conditions.

The weather event will cause notably cold early mornings, as well as strong waves and coastal flooding in low-lying areas of the northwestern coast, including the Havana seawall.

According to information cited by the Civil Defense, from the Forecast Center of the Meteorological Institute, during the passage of the frontal system, cloud cover with showers and rain will increase, spreading across the rest of the national territory, while behind the front, a dry and very cold air mass will advance, intensifying the drop in temperature.

The notice warns that in the coming hours the cold front will arrive in the western region and will bring:

  • Increase in cloudy conditions, with showers and rain that will then spread to the rest of the country.
  • The arrival of a new mass of dry and very cold air will reinforce the wintry atmosphere and lead to notably cold mornings.
  • Strong swell with light to moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas of the northwestern coast, with waves measuring between 3 and 4 meters, including the Havana seawall.

The Civil Defense advised the public to stay informed through national media and official profiles on social networks.

On the other hand, he urged compliance with the local authorities' and Civil Defense's guidelines "in a disciplined manner."

In the notice itself, specific measures are suggested: dressing warmly and protecting children and the elderly; avoiding staying in low-lying areas of the north coast; not traveling through flooded areas; and following official guidelines.

The National Chief of the Civil Defense reported that, along with the Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources institutes, it is monitoring the evolution of the system and did not rule out the issuance of new alerts if necessary.

During the last few winters, Cuba has faced a recurring pattern of cold fronts that have marked the national climate with sharp drops in temperature and unusual weather events.

Since November, the country has begun to experience an increase in the frequency of these systems, accompanied by rainfall, northern winds, and chilly mornings that have particularly affected the western and central regions.

The year 2026 began with a new episode of low temperatures. In January, another cold front struck the western part of Cuba, causing rains, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperature.

Forecasts now warn that the cold air mass would reinforce winter conditions across the country, extending the cold towards the central and eastern regions.
