The Republican congresswoman from Florida María Elvira Salazar stated that the American continent is entering “the era of freedom,” marking one month since the capture and extradition of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro to the United States.
In a message posted on X, Salazar referred to Maduro as a “narco-terrorist” and stated that his extradition marks a turning point for the region: “Today marks a month since the dictator and narco-terrorist Nicolás Maduro was extradited to face justice in the United States for his crimes,” she wrote.
"Real signs of change" in just a few weeks
According to the legislator, concrete changes are already being observed in Venezuela just weeks after the fall of Chavism, including the release of political prisoners and a new energy landscape.
"Political prisoners released, Venezuelan oil no longer funding U.S. adversaries like Cuba, and a people who are looking to the future with hope," he stated.
"End of impunity for dictators"
Salazar stated that the U.S. action sends a strong message to the authoritarian regimes in the hemisphere: “The United States has put an end to the era of impunity for dictators in our hemisphere. The future belongs to freedom.”
The congresswoman had already publicly celebrated Maduro's arrest on January 3, describing it as a historic moment for Venezuela.
Regional Impact: Cuba under Pressure
The reference to Venezuelan oil becomes significant at a time when Washington has intensified its strategy to cut off the flow of crude oil that has sustained the Cuban regime for years.
Salazar suggested that, without Maduro, one of the external pillars that kept Havana afloat despite its internal crisis is also weakened.
