William Stevenson, ex-husband of the First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, has been formally charged with first-degree murder following the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson, which occurred on December 28, 2025, at their residence in New Castle County, Delaware.
The news, confirmed by local police on Tuesday, February 3, has shaken both the political landscape and the media sphere, due to the former relationship with the now wife of former President Joe Biden.
Stevenson, 77 years old, was arrested and remains detained at the Howard Young Correctional Institution, as he was unable to pay a cash bail set at $500,000.
A death under suspicion of domestic violence
According to reports from authorities, officers responded to the couple's residence after receiving a call about a domestic dispute on December 28.
Upon arrival, they found Linda Stevenson unconscious in the living room. Despite the resuscitation efforts applied on site, the woman was declared dead shortly after.
The body was delivered to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy, a standard practice when there are indications of violent death.
The official cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, but Stevenson's arrest came after a police investigation that lasted several weeks.
"The formal indictment from the grand jury was the result of a lengthy investigation," stated Corporal Richard Chambers, spokesperson for the county police.
The Delaware Department of Justice collaborated in the process that led to the indictment.
A discreet and familiar profile
Linda Stevenson, 64, was remembered in her obituary as a woman who was “very family-oriented,” a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, and an enthusiastic traveler with her daughter and granddaughter.
In recent years, he had established his own accounting firm and built trusting relationships with many of his clients.
"Linda will be remembered as a tenacious, kind, and very loyal person. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her," states the tribute published by her family.
The marriage of Jill Biden and William Stevenson
William Stevenson was married to Jill Biden (then Jill Tracy Jacobs) from 1970 to 1975. At that time, Jill was a student at the University of Delaware and was 18 years old when they got married.
Stevenson, five years older, was a well-known figure in the local scene after founding The Stone Balloon Club, a university bar that became a cultural landmark in Newark, New Jersey, hosting artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and The Allman Brothers Band.
The marriage between Stevenson and Jill ended in 1975, shortly after she met then-Senator Joe Biden.
The divorce process included a legal dispute over the ownership of the bar, which Jill Biden attempted to share, although she ultimately lost the lawsuit.
The post-presidential office of President Biden and representatives of Jill Biden have declined to comment on the arrest of Stevenson.
At the moment, it is unknown whether the accused has hired legal representation to face the judicial process.
