The news has crossed borders and struck hard at two Cuban families. From the island, amidst phone calls filled with tears and broken words, friends and relatives are still in shock after the murder of a Cuban woman in Las Vegas, at the hands of her partner, who is also of Cuban origin.

"Everyone is very sad, distraught. She was a very loved person, everyone cared for her," said Llien Miranda, a close friend of the victim, in statements made to Telemundo Las Vegas.

The tragedy occurred on January 23, when, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, José Galán Prevald, 46 years old, fatally stabbed his girlfriend.

The victim, identified by her friends as Yaimira, was Cuban and worked in the healthcare sector. Family members and close acquaintances state that she had graduated with a specialization in pediatrics and was highly regarded by those who shared time with her at the polyclinic where she worked in Cuba. Her death has left a profound void not only among her loved ones but also in the community that knew her.

From the other side of pain, a woman who identified herself as the accused's first cousin also spoke from Cuba. Her words reflect the devastation of a family that struggles to understand what has happened.

"From here, from Cuba, all I can say is that the pain we feel is immeasurable. I know that both families are suffering because there is a deceased in between, and this was not something that was expected to happen," he expressed.

At another moment, he summarized the shared sentiment with a broken phrase filled with emotion: "With pain, we are all suffering from his failure."

According to family members, José Galán Prevald holds a degree in optometry and had emigrated to the United States in search of new opportunities. He is now facing charges of murder with a deadly weapon.

During his court appearance, a judge denied him bail, and the case was transferred to Department Eight of the Las Vegas Justice Court.

While the legal process unfolds, there remains in Cuba and outside the island a mourning, disbelief, and the feeling that a life was lost in the most tragic way. A story that, beyond courts and charges, leaves broken families and a community marked by pain.
