Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar harshly criticized the appearance of Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel this Thursday, accusing him of demanding more sacrifices from the people while the regime clings to power and lives in privilege.
“Díaz-Canel today called on the Cuban people for ‘creative resistance’: more sacrifices, more hunger, and tough times for the people, while the regime clings to power and lives in privilege,” wrote the legislator from Florida on her X account.
Salazar stated that the dictatorship "does not offer solutions; it demands that the people bear the burden of its failure," referring to the ruler's comments on the energy crisis and the lack of fuel on the island.
During his appearance, Díaz-Canel acknowledged the seriousness of the country's situation, the lack of oil since December, and the need to implement restrictive and saving measures. However, the speech generated criticism both inside and outside of Cuba for insisting on the idea of "resistance" without offering concrete alternatives to alleviate the economic collapse.
"Cuba can no longer endure. Cuba deserves freedom," concluded the congresswoman, one of the strongest voices in the U.S. Congress advocating for the Cuban cause.
Salazar's statements add to a wave of reactions following the leader's address, which echoed the rhetoric of the Special Period and sparked frustration among Cubans due to the lack of real solutions.
