The actor Erdwin Fernández has joined the expressions of solidarity for the young content creators of El 4tico following their detention.
“It's been demonstrated: In a 'little room'. The little room has more crutches... and ovaries than all of Cuba and us who left. That is the youth we want and that truly represents Cuba,” commented the actor.
Fernández's statements add to those of other artists such as Haydée Milanés, Luis Alberto García, and Ulises Toirac.
García publicly condemned the detention of young Kamil Zayas Pérez, a member of the independent project El4tico, and demanded his immediate release, arguing that he was arrested solely for expressing critical ideas.
In a post on Facebook, García Novoa wrote: “This young man has been detained. Another one. He explains so well what he defends and feels that I have no choice but to respect him greatly and demand his release. It is terrible to imprison ideas, whatever they may be.”
The actor accompanied his message with the full text of a letter written by Kamil Zayas before his arrest, in which the young man anticipated his detention and claimed that it would not be for any common crime, but for expressing what he considers uncomfortable truths for those in power.
Toirac believes that the detention of young creators shows that in Cuba there is a “fear and repression” of freedom of expression.
For her part, Milanés stated that the arrest of the young people is “one more testament to the horror” of the Cuban regime.
"Yesterday, these two young Cubans were arrested simply for expressing their thoughts. Let the world know that in #Cuba, divergent thinking is cruelly persecuted and punished. This is not new; it is yet another testament to the horror we live through in Cuba. Below, I leave you the message that Kamil left, anticipating this arrest," Milanés wrote on Facebook.
The artist refers to a letter written by the activist Kamil Zayas Pérez, a member of the independent project, who was arrested on Friday in Holguín along with Ernesto Ricardo Medina during a police operation.
