The U.S. Government reported on Thursday that Cuban agents “have been harassing” the Chargé d'Affaires of its embassy in Havana, Mike Hammer, during recent trips across the island.
The Under Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, stated on social media that Washington has identified those involved and warned that there will be consequences.
"I want these individuals to understand that we know who they are and that we will respond accordingly, including, among other measures, with visa sanctions," he stated.
Landau added that, according to international law, "diplomats must have the freedom to carry out their duties without being harassed by thugs."
The undersecretary also shared a video in which screams can be heard as Hammer approaches an official vehicle.
The U.S. mission chief has recently traveled to various locations across the country to engage in dialogue with local communities.
The complaint comes at a time of heightened tension between Washington and Havana, following the energy blockade imposed by President Donald Trump's administration, which includes tariffs on those supplying crude oil to the island— a measure that has exacerbated the energy crisis in Cuba.
