The causes of the fire that destroyed three homes in the vicinity of Parque Las Américas in San Germán (Urbano Noris), Holguín province, are still under official investigation, according to the province's Fire Department.
In a statement released by the newspaper Ahora, the Holguín Fire Department specified that their personnel responded “in the afternoon/evening yesterday to a large-scale fire that completely affected the structure of three homes located around Las Américas park.”
The official statement emphasized that there were no fatalities. "The most important thing: no human casualties. Thanks to the rapid intervention and coordinated efforts, no lives have been lost," the announcement stated. It also noted that the units worked to prevent the spread of the flames to neighboring homes.
Regarding the origin of the incident, authorities reiterated that "the causes of the incident have not yet been officially determined" and that specialists are working alongside other agencies to clarify what happened.
As part of the update provided by Radio SG La Voz del Azúcar, it was reported that “medical attention is being provided to the victims and work is underway to relocate their belongings to safe places.” The station also stated that “the authorities declared that the locations to be handed over to the four families affected by the fire have already been identified.”
The fire was reported on the night of February 16, as previously indicated in reports about the incident, which showed images and videos of homes engulfed in flames while neighbors tried to assist those affected.
On social media, many citizens reacted with messages of sorrow and solidarity for the affected families. "How sad, stay strong; at least there are no human losses, material things can be replaced," wrote one person. Another commented, "What a tragedy for those four families."
At the same time, several users questioned the response to the emergency. “The firefighters arrived after the houses had already burned down, Holguín's firefighters with the terrible road conditions. Blessings for those families, may God lend a hand,” said one internet user. Another stated, “The state-run media always manipulating the news in their favor.”
There were also remarks about the material conditions in the municipality. "They don't even have water," wrote one user. In another comment, it says: "It's not possible that the only option is to wait an hour for the firefighters from Holguín to arrive."
One person also expressed: “It's sad that the firefighters are only a few blocks away from those houses, and as always in Cuba, poverty and misery reign. Strength to those families!”
So far, no additional details have been provided regarding the causes of the fire or any potential responsibilities. The official investigation is ongoing while the affected families await housing solutions after the total loss of their homes.
